The High Tunnel System Initiative by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) aims to improve plant quality, soil health, and reduce nutrient and pesticide transport. It supports producers in extending the growing season for high-value crops in an environmentally safe manner. Financial assistance is available for implementing high tunnels, which also contribute to local food markets by increasing the availability of fresh vegetables, fruits, and other crops throughout more of the year.
For detailed information, please visit the NRCS High Tunnel Initiative page.
The NRCS’s On-Farm Energy Initiative supports producers in identifying and improving energy efficiency in their operations through energy audits. This program aims at reducing energy costs and enhancing environmental sustainability by creating an Agricultural Energy Management Plan (AgEMP) tailored to each farm’s needs.
For more details, visit the NRCS On-Farm Energy Initiative page.
The Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program, operational since 1988, functions as a decentralized competitive grants and education initiative. It supports sustainable agricultural practices across the United States through funding innovative projects that enhance profitability, stewardship, and quality of life for farmers, ranchers, and researchers. With a focus on four different regional entities, SARE offers a range of grant opportunities designed to advance knowledge and implementation of sustainable farming and ranching methods.
For more information, please visit the SARE website.
The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) offered by the NRCS provides financial and technical assistance to agricultural producers to address natural resource concerns and deliver environmental benefits. EQIP supports practices like conservation, water management, and soil health improvements. Producers interested in applying must meet certain eligibility criteria, and applications are accepted on a continuous basis, with deadlines for ranking periods.
